Remediation and Core Class Support
My name is Jan Kooistra. This is my second year at Apprentice Academy and I am an EC teacher. Along with teaching, I am currently in a Master’s program for Special Education and that has made life extra busy. I am married with four children, ages 20, 19, 17, & 13 and one of whom has special needs. I lived overseas in the Philippines and Peru between 2001 and 2014 and I home-schooled my children at different stages but always my oldest son. In 2011, I studied with the National Institute of Learning Development (NILD) to become an educational therapist. I started a special education program while I was still overseas but then when we came home I joined a private educational therapy practice and also had my own clients. In 2016, my oldest son attended the public middle school for eighth grade and I worked at a teacher’s assistant. The following year I took a position as a literacy tutor. In the fall of 2019, both my son and I joined the staff and students of Apprentice Academy. As a parent and a staff member I can say I am grateful to be part of this school. I look forward to working with your student.
